English:
The
Warren City Schools high school English program is designed to provide
students with the reading, writing, and speaking skills necessary for
success after graduation. Advanced courses challenge and stimulate
students who are thinking about continuing their academic education
after high school in a related field, for example: English, foreign
language, journalism, theatre, or other arts-related fields. The
advanced courses are also very valuable for students considering
medicine or other fields that place a high degree of importance on
research and writing skills. General courses are directed toward
stimulating and challenging students who will utilize theses critical
skills at the university or post-secondary training level. Two
trimester length courses are offered at the ninth through twelfth grade
levels. English I is part of the Freshmen Foundations program and is
offered for three trimesters. Freshmen and Sophomore classes provide
the skills necessary for success at the Junior and Senior levels.
Students are acquainted with the major literary genres of short story,
novel, poetry, prose, drama, and non-fiction. In addition, grammar,
vocabulary and composition skills are taught. A passing grade at the
Freshmen level is necessary before a student may enroll in a Sophomore
class.
Vocational students need three English credits; academic students must have four. Students with permission may take more than the required one unit of English per year. The enrichment elective courses are highly recommended, but they do not fulfill the English requirement.
